What’s the Difference Between an Inciting Incident and a First Plot Point? – by Jami Gold… — Chris The Story Reading Ape’s Blog

Many of us start with great ideas for our story, so we begin our draft in an energetic scramble to get our ideas down on the page. But how do we get from those opening pages to the rest of our story? Can the story beat of an Inciting Incident help us? What about the […]

This one is greatly late. I apologize.

Thank you for the new photo prompt Sue

Read from the beginning:

First Story

Second Story

Third Story

Fourth:

Cia wanted to know who was in that tower. It was morning and the storm had raged on throughout the night leaving the earth in a dense fog making it difficult on the eyes. The spring rain quenced the thirsty land.

Skipping, jumping, and running over mud pockets, she came upon some boulders keeping herself hidden. The fog was too thick to see across the meadow.

She slipped through the opening and crawled over the rocks through a small creek. Her furs became soaked making it hard to move.

Coming upon a small grass hill, she climbed up and slowly peeked over. The dew from the grass felt great on Cia’s parched lips. Winter was not kind to her skin.

There were two small beings, possibly dwarfs, gathering scraps of wood and taking them into the tower. Their clothes looked like scraps of fabric sewn together like patches. Their noses were noticeable from this distance outweighing anything else on their face. They pushed at each other going through the tower door.  One had dropped all their woods. It picked up a piece and threw it at the other. It was a comedic relief for Cia.

Her foot slipped making a rock roll down the hill. They looked in Cia’s direction. They spied Cia and began to run toward her. She shot down and took off towards the forest. Running as fast as she could back through the creek and mud. She dared not lead them back to her cave instead she circled them back towards the tower.

Whisper met the dwarves at the edge of the forest ready to pounce them. He howled letting Cia know it was safe to go home. But when she turned to go back she came face to face with  another. It’s eyes glared red, barely noticeable through the dark fur. It’s teeth bared and paws raised. Her heart felt like it was going to jump out of her throat.

Cia took a step back but she fell. The bear came after. She crawled away and got up to run as Whisper jumped over her head and attacked the bear. Feeling helpless, she began to throw rocks at the bear. She held tears back watching Whisper being attacked on her behalf. She continued to throw the rocks. Other rocks appeared out of thin air hitting the bear. Cia looked around but she couldn’t see anything or anybody else.

“WHISPER.”

Cia and Whisper ran with all their might back to their home.

Exhausted and winded, they sit in their dark cave listening for anything that may have followed them. Whisper whimpered as Cia hugged him.

She lit a small fire and gave him a look over. There. A small gash under Whisper’s front leg. He was losing blood and losing it fast. She needed to patch it quickly.

“Stay here.”

Cia’s first two stories:

Thursday Photo Prompt- Day Break #WritePhoto

A storm was brewing, Cia felt it in the air. Clouds began to form as flashes of lightning in the distance came closer. Thunder rumbled.

Made of stone, mud, and moss, the once bustling tower stood in the middle of the field. Alone. Like that tower, so was Cia.

She gathered as much firewood as she could manage to carry back to the cave.

The wolf she had nursed back to health met her at the entrance. Whisper had caught a rabbit. Cia harvested it and gave the wolf the meat while she kept the fur. She was a bit tired of rabbit meat.

She found Whisper in an abandoned den nearly dead. The pup barely had its eyes open. Cia didn’t want to leave it. Now nearly half Cia’s size, it kept her from feeling lonely.

The storm was closer now and Whisper hunkered at the back of the cave. Cia closed off the entrance with a makeshift door.

The smoke from the fire eased its way out of a pitch at the top of the cave while the fish cooked.

She reflected on her past as she sometimes did. The fire became a blur as she became dazed.

Her mother’s smile warmed her heart. Her father’s arms made her feel strong. Her small siblings playfulness gave her energy.

Whispers whines brought her back to reality. The wind had blown the door down and rain started to pool in.

As she was fixing the door she looked out at the building in the field. The tower that hadn’t had any activity now had light coming from the window.

Cia’s first appearance began there —> Thursday photo prompt: Chill #writephoto

Cia awakens just before daybreak. The snow has started to melt away. She listens for movement of those coming out of hibernation. She steps out of the cave to watch the sun greet the earth. The warmth felt great. Loneliness crept up on her once again as she thought about her family. The winter was long and she starved for more than food.

Crouched behind some trees, Cia looked for any signs of danger. She was craving fish from the river. With her handmade line, rod, and a bit of rabbit innards she threw the hook into the slow moving water. Studying the movement of the river Cia notices a dark figure walking across the way. She scurried behind a tree once again. It looked to be a large bear on its hind legs. It stared in her direction, sniffed the air but it appeared to ignore her and moved on down the river. Relief washed over her.

Her line pulled and she jerked it up. A small pike but it was better than nothing.

Character Sketch  Got an A in my Fictional Writer Workshop! Just needed a bit more dialogue. Let me know what you think!

Dodging the drones, Cynara Trevino made her way to the four-story science building. The foggy dawn made it easy to travel as it was when things were settling down or beginning to stir. She concealed herself among the overgrown foliage keeping all senses activated. Listening and searching for anything that moved. She was startled by small movement; a gray micro cat was rubbing itself across her feet. She reached down to pet the peculiar animal. She noticed that his fur hid the extra paws, but his playful nature made her smile. It sniffed the air and started towards whatever it smelled. She watched as it slinked off towards an abandoned building.

She eased towards the entrance ducking behind statues and boulders along the way.  At the door, she began to pick the lock, but the door opened revealing her brother, Kevin. Startled, he asked what she was doing there. She told him she had planned for weeks on how to get the medication for their sister and that she knew where they kept the antidotes. He didn’t like it but knew their sister’s life was hanging in the balance and Cynara would not give up.

She hid in the compartment of his janitor cart and proceeded to wheel her through the corridor towards the pharmacy. The putrid smells of blood, alcohol, urine and feces seeped through the antiseptics, but the smell of fear was the strongest. Buzzing fluorescent lights, sliding doors, and the cart’s wheels echoed through the halls. She strained to listen for any signs of dangers.

Kevin stopped at the janitorial closet, pressed the passcode, and entered. Once in, he started to gripe at Cynara, but she paid no mind except to tell him thanks. She found a lab coat and proceeded out of the closet. Kevin tried to stop her but knew better and handed her his key card to the dispensary. A quick peek through the cracked door told her that the hall was clear. Closing the door behind her she edged towards the pharmacy in hopes she would not be recognized. The walls were grey and were scraped in places from the animal’s claws and beds that have bumped into them. They were lined with photographs of doctors, faculty, and college students that had graduated. In a nearby room she could hear moans and wails of agony from mutated animals. The door slid open and a bed was being pushed through. A pseudo human laid strapped atop it. His screams muffled by a mask that prevented him from spitting and biting. The doctors were trying to inject sedation into the fighting being. She fought the urge to free him. She must to get to those meds.

While her heart broke for these ill-treated beings she also needed to save her sister. As she rounded a corner she bumped into her best friend, Michelle. She didn’t realize she was still here as she thought she was evacuated with the rest of the crew. They grew up together which meant they did everything together. Even went to the same college. Even though they were considered nerds, Michelle was the popular one of the two. Red hair, green eyes, and cherry lips won the guys over Cynara’s dark brown hair, steel blue eyes, and tomboyish flare.

“Cynara what are you doing here? You’re going to get yourself killed.”

She pulled her into an empty room and explained the situation.

“But there are guards everywhere. How are you going to get to the pharmacy without someone recognizing you?

Cynara gave her a ‘will you help me?’ look.

“Oh, no, no, no! I can’t be a part of this. I’ve been working too hard trying to create an antidote behind their backs. I can’t get caught with you.”

“But Eva needs those cell blockers until you do though. I understand your position, at the same time, I’m trying to keep my sister alive. Her blood cells have mutated faster than before, and I’ve ran out of everything that I could possibly give her. Kevin gave me his key pass. Help me get to the pharmacy and I’ll do the rest, please.”

Michelle agreed to help and lead the way. Cynara followed behind while keeping her eyes averted as to not gain attention. They reached the door to the pharmacy and hugged goodbye. Cynara plugged the key card and rushed in closing the door behind her. Leaning against the door relieved she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. The room was stuffy with an undertone of bleach. Glancing around, there were two researchers across the room and thankfully they took no notice of her. She began to look for the potions that would inevitably save her dying sister.

Moments later, the door burst open and guards poured in, “THERE SHE IS, ARREST HER”.

Cynara tried to run only to be caught and put in handcuffs that tore her flesh. While the guards grappled with her she saw Kevin slink in unseen. She felt a little relief knowing that their sister might live. She continued to struggle to keep their attention. Just as the guards swept her out, Michelle passed by. They quickly exchanged glances. And then she was gone.

She was taken through an unknown area of the building. The dim lights made it difficult to see. They came upon rusting double doors. When they were opened she was hit with the foulest air. Her lungs stung with each breath. Decaying bodies permeated the humid air as rats scurried along the walls and there was water dripping from the ceiling. Their footsteps echoed on the cement floor as the guards walked her to another set of double doors. Growls and guttural sounds were emanating from behind various metal doors along the hall. Sounds that she could never unhear. Things behind those doors that she can’t unsee.

As the guards open one of the doors filled with cages of neglected animals those sounds became louder. Intrusive. The room felt claustrophobic with the same smells as the corridor. Lit only by a single bulb that look like it was going out soon. They put her in a cell next to a human who was their test subject. He was cowered in the corner of his cell. Upon closer examination she noticed he had animal looking eyes as they had slits like a cat and golden fur growing in places where his own hair would be. Thoughts of Eva dying and Kevin getting those meds made Cynara even more anxious.

She found out that his name was Jim and that he had been one of the students who applied for the medical trials. He thought he was testing a new medication to stabilize his diabetes. She apologized that he was misinformed and that once she realized what her colleagues were doing she tried to put a stop to it only to be expelled. She told him about her sister. That she was bitten by one of the infected animals and passed on the infection to her sister which in turn makes her DNA mutate into whatever the animal was.

It seemed like ages as she set there locked up and unable to do anything.

Someone was unlocking the door. She was surprised to see Michelle. As she unlocked Cynara’s cell she told her that Kevin was waiting out in the hall with his cart and will take her to an exit. She answered the unasked question that he was able to get the meds. They met Kevin at the end of the hall. She climbed inside his cart once again and he wheeled it towards the exit where Cynara had entered. They were able to escape the security checks.

Dawn has since passed into dusk and it was only a matter of time before the creatures stirred. Making sure her knives were accessible she proceeded towards home. Security wasn’t going to follow her into the unknown. Even armed.

Hunkered down behind a boulder she listened for things she couldn’t see. The rustling leaves alarmed all her senses. She felt something coming towards her. Whether it slithered, crawled, or walk she could not tell. A low rumble sounded behind her. The hair on her neck stood and goosebumps formed on her sweating skin. Slowly she turned and was face-to-face with eyes that seem to glow red and bared teeth. Time seemed to stand still as she tried to draw her knives. She knew not to scream as it would garner attention from other creatures of the night.

Without warning, something pounced on top of the creature and they rolled away. All she had time to see was a blur of yellow. The fighting caught the attention of other creatures. She darted out into the moonless night and ran as stealthily as she could home. The sounds of animalistic fighting reverberated through the dark behind her. She did not stop until she reached the entrance of her family’s living quarters.

The door sprung open and her father stood there relieved, “Mija, I heard you had gotten caught. Eva isn’t doing good. Please tell me you have the medication.”

“I do, papá.”

Flickering candles lit the small two room apartment. They rushed to Eva’s beside. Cynara tried not to gag on the smell of body odor and sickness. The humidity made it worse. She set a candle on the bedside table. Eva’s breathing was fast and short. Her heart looked as though it was trying to escape her chest. Her skin was slick with sweat. Cynara knew it was her sister’s body trying to change. She readied the needle full of the medication and administered it straight to the main vein of her arm. They watched as her breathing and heart rate stabilized.

Moments later, a knock on the door startled her.

Her father grabbed her arm, “Cyn, don’t answer.”

“Cynara, it’s Michelle, please hurry, let us in.”

Cynara opened the door. Michelle, Jim, and Kevin stood in the shadows. Jim was leaning heavily onto Kevin. Without stronger light she was unable to access him. She waved them in and locked the door.

Michelle handed her a first aid kit, “Do you mind if Jim stays here? There is medication in there for him and Eva. His body can heal the wounds.”

Cynara didn’t know how to react. What she wanted to say was ‘no’ but looking at Jim and how he protected her made her heart sink, “Yeah, he can stay. Thank you for the meds.”

Kevin laid Jim onto a couch and handed him a duffle bag.

Michelle asked how Eva was doing then said, “Cynara, I think I’ve found a way to obliterate the Science of Today soiree once and for all, but I’m going to need your help. Kevin and I are going back to the building. Let us know soon.”

They all hugged goodbye and left. Her best friend and her brother made their way back to the science building.

That evening, as Cynara sat by her sister who was regaining consciousness, she thought about how she was going to help Michelle defeat the Science of Today INC. It was as if it had been the signal she waited for, Cynara Trevino tightened her hoodie, sheathed her knives, and slinked back to the four-story warzone.

Sue Vincent’s photo prompt

by Sue Vincent

The wet snow stuck to her boots as Cia tracked the rabbit that had escaped the trap. Her fingers have started to go numb as well as her nose. Frigid winds slapped her face and made her eyes water. The sun was setting but she was hungry. She had been surviving off of boiled bones from a previous rabbit she had harvested weeks prior.

Carefully and as quietly as possible, she tiptoed around fallen branches and leaves keeping a sharp eye on the animal tracks. Her stomach rumbled. She settled it by eating the fresh snow.

Movement up ahead caught her attention. She stood still and listened only moving her eyes.

The rabbit was sitting by a small skeletal bush.

As still as she could, Cia readied her homemade slingshot.

With the rabbit in aim she projected the pebble barely missing it as the rabbit hopped off.

She let out a heavy breath she didn’t know she was holding and hung her tiresome head.

Exhausted and starving, she sat on a small boulder to rest for a minute.

The setting sun was looming. Snow started to fall once again slowly covering any tracks left by the animals. She knew she must get back to her shelter, but the pain of hunger was stronger. She followed the disappearing tracks until she could no longer see them as the snow had filled them.

Darkness was descending upon the earth and the warmth was leaving her body.

Trudging home without food, she resat the snares with a hopeful heart.

Another chilly night of watered down bone broth.

In #Magic We Trust!

Trust the magic of your creativity.
I have so much going on at the moment and I have much to say natheless I need time to soak up all my research into my soul.
Meanwhile, I want to talk about the magic of creativity and storytelling.
As a writer myself, I am still honing my skills.
I don’t have any interest in how to’s. I don’t have the top five ways to write a good character. I don’t have any tips or tricks on grammar or narrative structure. Most of it is guff anyway and if you’re interested in your craft and in your journey you will figure it out.
You’ll break the rules and do things in your own way.
Creativity is what I play with, dance with, and stand for.
Creativity and storytelling are a continual magical practice.
I’m interested in how giving yourself permission to do the thing that your heart calls for. I’m curious to know the creativity that cracks you open, allowing you to express yourself. To understand yourself and respect yourself.
We must defeat perfectionism. Love the untidiness of the beginning. Nurture that inner child. Accept the agonizing pain of the subpersonality that judges and demeans us.
When we are telling our stories, when we take the mask off, we are free from the traditional ideas.
Your creativity is what I’m drawn to.
Write about what you want to read!
Let the rest go.

A view from my desk…

I have been meaning to get back to work on PJ, Rena, and John’s story but life happens. I can be fully prepared, knuckles popped, and pen poised only to have an important phone call or some other pressing matters to disrupt my work.

How do other writers do this?

As of right now, I am brainstorming ideas to complete their story. It is taking longer than I expected. There has been a turn in events that I must iron out within this story. I don’t think John realizes the mess he’s gotten himself into. Hopefully, everything will pan out without him being eliminated.

He’s got a lesson to learn for sure. PJ doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve so she gives the vibe that she doesn’t really care but she’s got a heart of gold. She’ll do what she needs to do then deal with the emotional side of it later. Kick butt now asks names later type.

Rena, a garden fairy, is PJ’s friend and as you might notice, she is a bit clingy and it irritates PJ to no end. Flighty but feisty, Rena is, and y’all will see that soon.

So far we’ve got fairies, trolls, elves, and humans. Will there be more?

I appreciate every one of yall.

Take care.

Warning this is a breakneck read as I am still editing to flesh this out. Constructive Criticism is welcome.

Chapter One:

Dirt and leaves tangled in my hair as Rena pushed me to the ground. She pressed her hand over my mouth and whispered, “hush or they’ll hear you.”

“First of all”, as I said getting up and flinging the ground liter from my hair, “don’t do that again. Second of all, I know about them and I’m sure they’ve already heard me coming a mile off. On top of that, you made us sound like thunder doing what you just did, so there’s that. I’m here because of them. I need their help”.

“What on earth could you possibly need help with that I cannot?

Before I could answer, we heard giggling and the air smelled faintly of sweet apples. “Too late they’re already here”. Nope, I can’t forget that giggle. I’d know her from anywhere. “I know you’re there, Kityin, show yourself.”

“Well, looky who it is, Mave. It’s sneaky Rena.”

I gave Rena a curious look and she shook her head as she said, “Long story, besides we’re here for you not me”.

Kityin circled me, “So who might Rena’s friend be and why do you need my people’s help?”

“Names PJ. I was told by a magie that I may be able to acquire help from the woodlands to find my brother. He left this note saying that he was going to the underground city, but I have no idea where that is or why he went and so I’m here.”

“Girl, you do not want to go there. Wherever your brother went, he is there to stay. There is no way out once a human enters the Elven city” Mave cautioned.

“All the more reason why I need your help,” I said tucking the letter back in my pocket.

“Did you not hear just what I said? You will never leave.”

“I don’t care. I need to find him. Just tell me where to go and I’ll leave you alone.”

“You humans never learn. That’s why we don’t mix because those that do never come out on the other side if you catch my drift.”

“I understand the risks. I can manage. If I don’t come out well I guess me and my brother will be pestering each other till we die.”

“Oh, no honey no no no…see you won’t find him. There are passages beyond passages. Each one leading to another time and place of the underground city.”

I was getting irritated with her hindering, “Gee, I wonder where these stories come from? If you’re not going to help me please get out of my way. Oh, and leave my friend here alone.”

“Fine. Your grave.”

Something materialized in her hands, “here’s a map to get to the entrance. After that, you’re on your own. Good luck.”

Once she vanished I took out my compass. “Looks like it’s going to be a long journey and these fairies aren’t any help. Wait…”

I turn to Rena, “aren’t you Faye?”

“Yeah, but not the kind you need.”

“So, you can’t help me.”

“I’m just a garden fairy. I don’t have the all-powerful magic like Kityin.”

Rena seemed upset about it so I didn’t inquire further. Descending from the edge of the forest we walked until we couldn’t walk anymore. Frankly, I was exhausted, “It’s almost dawn, let’s break then we we’ll continue”.

We didn’t even have time to sit before the sound of leaves being shuffled caught our attention. Rena grabbed my arm, touching me yet again, pushing me into a hollowed tree.

She mouthed, “stay here” then left.

“Oh pahleeze, I already know you’re there.” bellowed a giant.

I stepped out of the tree and had to crank my head up until it hurt to see the tall creature standing before me. She was covered in leather and fur and carting a large ax on her back. I looked around and couldn’t see Rena anywhere.

The giant laughed thunderously, “a human among our forest. Do you know what happens to humans who trespass?”

Bravely I stood my ground, “I’m looking for the entrance to the Elven city.”

She bursted with laughter again, “no human goes there and lives to tell about it.”

“Please, just tell me how to get there and I’ll be on my way. I didn’t mean to trespass.”

The big creature reached down with her big hand to grab at me. I fell to the ground and rolled away missing her hand.

Rena appeared out of thin air, “HEY, OVER HERE!”

The creature seemed confused by her flitting around its head and started after her. The ground shook with every stomp and I struggled to stay on my feet. I didn’t know what to do and I wasn’t going to leave my friend. I readied my slingshot and hit its head. The ball did not damage as it bounced off. I went for my dagger but Rena came running for me. The creature stopped stomping, looked around, but couldn’t see us. Rena had cloaked us. We stood as still as possible and barely breathed. The creature, confused, started off and disappeared, “You won’t get away next time” she bellowed.

“What was …” but it was no use, she had gone and done it again. I pulled her hand away from my mouth and my glare reminded her, no touching. Quietly as we could I got the map out to redirect ourselves. The compass needle was spinning. The forest quickly grew dark and the trees seem to reach for us. We tried to run but something caught our legs and dragged us along the foliage. Next thing I know I hear a faint voice.

“PJ, wake up.”

My hands and feet were tied up. My body felt like a big ol’bruise as I struggled to sit up. Everything looked and felt hazy, and my voice cracked, “we’re in the Elven city, aren’t we?”

“Shhh, the guards are right outside the door.”

Rena tried to untie our ropes, but they tightened on their own, “magic ropes.”

Someone was opening the lock, “welcome to your new beginning.”

I couldn’t believe who was standing in the doorway.

If we were having a drink…

If we were having a drink…

I’d tell you that I’ve gotta go play 9ball at pool league tonight. Still can not bring myself to like the game but I’m not quitting. One, because I’ll be disqualified from any of the future tournaments. Two, I took on a challenge. I ain’t no quitter.

I’d tell you that my friend from last week’s post told me she was just playing and that she hadn’t heard from me. I don’t take kindly to someone only calling or texting me when they need something or when they come up for air, so to speak. I haven’t heard from her since I stopped texting first.

I’d tell you that I am going to start sharing a fictional story that I’ve been working on. I’ve been fearful of sharing my writing, except for some poetry. While I love constructive criticism (please do), there are those that feel that they need to say “you’re not good enough to be a writer.” A few days ago someone gave a very destructive criticism on someone’s twitter vss and then when they got confronted they put a bad review on the person’s book without buying it.

How are you? How’s your week?

Thank you for stopping by. I’d love to chat again.
